The manufacturing of chewing-gums
It was Thomas Adams who, by mixing chicle (latex from the sapodilla tree) with resin and syrup to obtain a paste, manufactured and then marketed the first chewing gums in 1872, called “New York Chewing Gum”, which is a gum to be chewed rather than swallowed.
The manufacturing
Today, chewing gum is made up of around 30% elastic gum and natural resins that are insoluble in water and especially in saliva.
Natural gums come from plants of various botanical families, mainly Sapotaceae, Apocynaceae, Moraceae and Euphorbiaceae.
Gum base is a complex product to manufacture: ingredients are carefully dosed to obtain gums with varying degrees of elasticity.
This gum is mixed with mineral fillers to give it a certain consistency when chewed. It's all about finding the right balance between elastic gum and mineral fillers.
In our calorie-free chewing gums, sugar (glucose) is replaced by undigested molecules that give structure (polyols), as well as by molecules that give the sweet taste with specific sweeteners.
The gum base is kneaded with its additives (flavoring, coloring...), heated, then the resulting paste is cut into small strips or put into a tabletting machine, depending on the desired shape.
