The manufacturing of multilayers gummies
Formula development
As with classic Gummies, it is necessary to go through a development phase before manufacturing.
Allowing for between 2 and 6 layers, it is necessary to develop a specific formula for each layer, and to ensure consistency between layers in terms of accounting for active ingredients. Each layer can have a different composition in terms of active ingredients, flavoring and coloring.
The manufacturing process
Premix
The first manufacturing stage is the same as for Gummies. The first step is to prepare the premix. As each layer can have different compositions, a different premix must be prepared for each layer. The active ingredients are dosed and mixed to obtain a uniform powder.
Molding
The premix is then mixed with the mother solution, made from gelatin and gluccose or maltitol (with or without sugars), to obtain a uniform solution ready for casting. This step must be repeated simultaneously for each Gummies layer, so that all layers can be cast at the same time.
To ensure that the different layers stick together without mixing, the timing must be very precise. A first layer is poured into a mold, then allowed to cool slightly without drying out completely. A second layer is then poured on top of the first, and so on until you have the right number of layers.
Drying & demolding
Once all the layers have been cast, the Gummies are left in their molds and stored in drying chambers for 1-2 days, to allow them to solidify and take on the shape of the mold.
The Gummies are then removed from the molds, oiled and transferred to the packaging lines for final packaging.
